There are several tips that you can use for successful team building activities for adults.
The first tip is to schedule the team building activity during the work hours. Even if a person enjoys their job, they are not going to want to spend extra time at work because they are required to go to a work event. Just an hour or two on Friday during the work day will be a lot better for the employees, then them having the spend a weekend at the office. It might be a good idea to have the activity during their lunch break as long as you provide food for them to eat.
The second tip is to consider asking the employees to volunteer for a project that might benefit a local charity or the community. This is because people will feel a lot better about spending their time doing something that will help other people. This is a great way to get everyone involved in the event and they will go away feeling positive about the activity that they have done. One thing that you could do is to plan on serving a meal for the local soup kitchen or organize a clothing drive for the community.
The third tip is to make sure that you are encouraging the employees to collaborate with each other and not compete with each other. If it feels like some type of contest to the employees, then a lot of the employees will focus on the winning aspect of what they are doing so they will not learn anything from the experience. Therefore, if you are trying to solve a problem within the company, it is a good idea to come up with an activity that will encourage the staff to work together instead of against each other.
The fourth tip is to make sure that the activity is accessible is to everyone who works for the company. There are some people who will enjoy playing softball or running in a relay race but this is not going to be for everyone. Then these people will feel like they have been left out of the activity and this is definitely something that you don’t want to happen. Therefore, you will need to think about any health problems or physical conditions when you are choosing an activity that everyone will enjoy doing together.
The fifth tip is to go offsite. You would be surprised how good it is going to do the company if you get outside of the four walls of the office. This is because people are going to feel more comfortable with interacting with each other. Even if the team building exercises are going to happen inside of the company boardroom, it is a good idea to book a meeting space that is offsite. This helps to give the impression that the team building exercises do not work that they would do on a regular basis.
The sixth tip is to make sure that you set clear expectations of what you want out of the team building exercises. The employees need to know exactly what the intent of the activity is other than not having to work for a couple of hours. Sometimes you might be wanting to come up with a new mission statement for the company or you might need processes that are more efficient. Even though you don’t want to talk about the whole event before it happens in details, the employees still need to know why the activity is happening in the first place.
